What’s the easiest way to cut internal keyways in a sprocket on a lathe. Is it possible?

That’s one idea I had and I tried that already. I’m able to start cutting but then the tooling will “pull” to the center of the sprocket. It’ll cut a a groove about 2-3mm then pull away.
I tightened the crap out of the tool post and cut off tool and that doesn’t help.
I’ll keep trying.
You mean the tool flexes towards the center? How much are you trying to remove at once?
Yes, the tool flexes to the center after it cuts in about 2-3mm.

I tilted the cutter into the keyway to no avail. I’ll keep trying.
Would this being a stainless piece have anything to do with it?
Yes. Do you have relief on your cutter? Stainless can work harden, too.
idk any thing really about machine tools, but i do know stainless is weird enough i dont like to work with it in any way.

I wanted to learn how to Tig Weld so I got a tig welder. I self taught myself and built several pretty good size projects.
After I was four projects in i was given a mild thing to weld up. That’s when I discovered how difficult stainless can is
The amount of drill bits I burn through is pretty bad. I usually get pissed off on how one is cutting, just keep pushing through until the piece turned colors before I switch bits. Then that last little bit to finish the hole I’ll burn through several more bits
Working with stainless in any way sucks. Except for welding.
Tig welding stainless is great
I assume you are using HSS? Is it sharp enough?
Yes, stainless sucks
Stainless looks real pretty once it’s welded. But it is way more difficult to make look pretty than mild steel.
