IKR? Last several clutches I've done, I used the plastic spud that came wif the clutch kit. Close to 30 years ago, I turned up an alignment spud from a wood dowel for an IHC Loadstar clutch. Used a metal lathe. Worked great. How's that fer sophisticated? .
How far do they expand?
Four general purpose mandrels M0, M1, M2, M3 ranging from 3/8″ to 1 9/16″

What holds them in place at desired diameter?
Friction/wedge
Make sure you are turning/grinding in the tightening direction.
Otherwise stuff can get loud fast ..

Most are run between centers with a drive dog. Can also clamp on the shank in a lathe too.
