Maybe early enough that he didn't have change, yet. I've had people pay with USPS money orders for stuff, if they're over about $75 there's only one local post office that has that kind of cash on hand. The other ones, even though some are much larger, don't do that many cash transactions.

I can't imagine a liquor store that couldn't make change for 100 bucks but I guess you never know
 
I always have a wad of cash with me just in case...
for the above reasons.
We were in Edmonton for xmas one year and i wanted some Baylies for coffee in the morning.
Went into a liqueur store and grabbed a bottle, walked up to Kumar and handed him a hundo.
He looked at it and said "Knot today buddy" so i left the bottle in front of him and moved on

Hed rather take debit or credit and not handle the cash, the crank heads want the cash. That simple.
