I'm contemplating buying the below axe, but its design has given me pause. I like what appears to be a hammer-like poll, but the eye is freaking me out, especially for re-hafting reasons. The "US 02" and circular punch markings initially led me to believe that this is a Woodings Verona, but I think that by well before 2002, their axes were made by True Temper. I can't find ANYTHING on this axe. Have any of you ever seen one like it (with that design/type of eye)? My apologies for the last pic, it's from the ad.

What are the chances it's more modern and chinese? It kinda looks more cast rather forged, to me.

I would typically agree with that assessment, but the "US" stamp, followed by a two-digit stamp, were specific to Woodings-Verona. It indicated that the axe was made in the United States, and what year it was made (in this case, 2002). Ames True Temper bought the company in 1999. The axe looks like it takes a pickaxe handle, and I've never seen that before.

do you have a purpose for said axe?

straight take, it dont happen often.

Probably not, now that I see the weird-ass design. I was initially drawn to it, because I thought that the hardened, hammer poll might be good for driving wedges. If that thing takes a pickaxe handle, it's gonna be way too cumbersome for little ole me to use it comfortably.

I've got other axes that work fine for the job. Just thought this one might be cool. Probably not now, especially if it's potentially a bat soup knockoff.

Stihl dealer used to sell spalt-fix headed axes. Square poll, was good for driving wedges. The handles would not hold up and a normal axe handle don't fit. I got one here with a handmade handle and another needing one

Ahh, eye see.

I see where it has cool but no practical use.

Fwiw, if you need to drive a wedge, the shorter handle and more importantly, the back as straight and flat as possible and driven as such. If your wedges horseshoe, your not doing it right.

Gotcha. Thanks for the advice. All three of my 3.5 pound axes are on 28" handles. That length seems to work good for me.
