What ya all working on??

I like the old stuff too. This Johnson is so old that it has points. I used to have a 1985 Evinrude 88hp V4. Dead reliable and simple to work on.

This fall the boss will likely send me to Mercury Marine school to edumacate me on the new stuff (so we can have a certified MM tech on site to keep MM happy). We were troubleshooting a computer controlled Mercruiser V8 the other day. Figured it out, but what a pain....

A friend had a varado 150??fail.
He was out in his boat.
It had just been in for service.
Guess the engine went limp.
Dealer told him how to over ride it.
He did
Fried it.
Cost dealer over 15k

Yeah they go into timing retard and fueling derate if the computer thinks something's wrong. Usually turns out to be a bad connection or wiring issue between a sensor and the computer. Your friend's engine probably had an overtemp related derate that actually was an overtemp......

Used to be that Sierra was like putting NAPA parts on your buggy, now I'm not sure where it's made. My 40hp Evinrude has been running one of their fuel pumps for 10+ years, when I bought the boat I took the VRO stuff off and went to a standard pump. I think they still have gears for the pin drive lower units 18-25hp, through BRP they are NLA

The pump rebuild kit did the trick for that 1971 Johnson 9.5. Guy still hasn't picked it up yet. Probably will soon now that winter looks to finally be fucking off. Also rebuilt the carb on a 1981 Evenrude 15hp. OEM kits are still available for those.

Been rebuilding a bunch of outboard and stern drive water pumps and fixing other boat shit lately. Rebuilt the wp on a 1967 Mercury 50hp I4. I've always liked the looks of those old art-deco Mercs.

Installing a new outboard, control box, and cables this afternoon after finishing assembling a new Kodiak 450 and YZ250F for the showroom. Busy season is nigh......
