A lot of it has been said, Main thing is food and water. if a societal breakdown happens then having a water source is critical. if you look on line you can buy all kinds of survival foods. they ain't cheap. go to the army surplus store and buy MRE's. they keep a long time.
Rice, beans canned food. anything that has a long shelf life. also to keep the stock fresh, don't go out and buy a ton of stuff and let it set for years. Stock up well but use it and replenish it when you do. it keeps everything from going out of date.
but without water none of it will be needed. you can't live without it. if you have no well i suggest storage in containers that won't contaminate it over time. or buy the bottle water. even if you have a well it's a good idea to have water stored. water can be contaminated by chemicals in the ground. How much water and food is needed will depend on the length of the breakdown. maybe a week and maybe forever. who knows. it would be good to have least a year stored.
Now for protection, it's a known fact that those who didn't prepare will come for yours. I don't know your gun laws, but you don't need a fully automatic weapon to protect what is yours. unless the crooks have them and they may have. Buy a gun or use what you have and be able to shoot well. you don't have to hit a dime at 100 yards, just a torso. Also have a gun for every member in your family that stays there and make sure they can shoot and handle a weapon properly. after all you don't want them accidentally shooting you in a tense situation. and if it happens it will be.
Buy plenty of ammo for each weapon and plenty will be different for everyone, to some plenty is 20 rounds, some you can never have enough. Learning shot placement is also a good way to conserve ammo. the spray and pray method is a waste. granted it may make them crap their pants but it won't stop them if you don't hit them. Also we are talking a breakdown where you may have to take a human life to defend your family and belongings. are you and your family prepared to do that? the ones coming for your stuff will be. This is just a few things to consider, i hope we never have to experience such an event but i fear it's coming, to what extent and severity only time will tell. Our politicians have failed us. that's a whole nother thread there.

I bought a pack every time i went to grocery store, for a while. i didn't have that much. some people had rooms full. i mighta had 100 rolls. don't know how many i have now. might be a good idea to buy some more. yeah i didn't mention that type of stuff but those things can make life easier.
