Firewoodn equipments

518’s are getting hard to find parts for too is what I’ve been told by a few guys that still have them. As far as a buncher vs a hoe chucker/shovel that old girl with a heel and grapple would shovel log just fine after you cut.
I am not worried about finding parts for Cat equipment,Finning has a good vintage parts department
I have lots of old Cat equipment, they are tough easy to fix and don't mind sitting around for a few years between use.
If i get a 518 then my 950 loader, the buncher and a 518 all run the 3304 engine. They sip fuel for the work they do.

The 518 I worked around allot did not sip fuel. Been around and owned a few skidders that will do more work on allot less. Eye am not a 518 fan at all... Was a factory reman machine, fukr was broke down weekly

We gots small peckerpole trees too.
A friend has a 518 without the winch,i can get it for $5000.00,and the plan was to put the timberjack winch on it.But somebody thankfully popped that bubble.
My plan was to buy that 518 for a backup parts unit and find one of the same series with a grapple.
Then sell my John Deere 440 if it didn't fit in.

Put a 548 grapple skidder back end on the 440 they bolt on.

i would take the cat over either of the others. although, the 450 would prolly be a good skidder. what winch is on it? likely a junkmatic. hell the cat might too, they used them for a long time in the 80s
gearmatics are strong, you just cant keep bands in um.

I like that a gearmatic can be free spooled with engine off. Aside from that I hope to never open another one up. This 450c has it all, no computer, Clark trans, Deere winch, 12v Cummins powerplant. A component built machine that will still pull volume. But it is on the larger rears and cradle than a normal 450c. And it sips fuel compared to a 648 or 548 for that matter

Esco stuff is easy to get here. The young grapple stuff is not
Young is still in business and making parts Esco is long gone stuff for their swingers aren’t easy to find anymore I’ve been told. Our 4 is young stuff last time I called up a few years back I was able to still get all the parts for the grapples without issues same with the swingers they made.

Yup on the gearmatic
The 450 looks like it was a well maintained tight machine,to bad it burnt.

I Hate PITA equipment so i appreciate all advice and experiences.
Just to make sure i add the disclaimer
I have never logged with equipment, other than plowing it down with my D7E during fire fighting.
It will be my retirement gig,had a big list of equipment except for a buncher.
crawler, loaders, grader, skidder, trucks and lowbeds, excavator, skid steer and 50% of a firewood processor that i have to get to work properly.
Anyone ever work on or hear of a Beaver Wood Eater...

Got my buddy the welder lined up and we started to cure the few issues the buncher had.
Had some small cracks welded in the boom, took the head off the mounting plate to weld some cracks and remove broken bolts out of the swing bearing. Had to get some bushings made up for the bolts. They had 5/8 bolts in 13/16 holes.
Was going to get the bearing retaped to 3/4 but there would still been slop in the holes.Had the machine shop make bushings to fit the shoulders of 5/8 bolts and fit tight into the 13/16 holes.
Now to get bolts to reattach. I am going to try and find some with long shoulders and have them shortened to the correct lenght.
On the one side 7 of the 20 bolts had been broke or fallen out.buncher.jpgswing bearing.jpgswing bearing 2.jpgbuncher2.jpg
