Never assume...
I did and it bit me
I bought bolts with a long shoulder so there would be better bearing surface in the inserts that i had made up for the bolt holes that are 3/4 with 5/8 bolts in them. I had to have the bolts shortened to the lenght of the blind holes. The holes in the one side are not threaded to the bottom of the holes like the other side.
So i got a good bottoming tap on order from the machine shop...
While waiting i tried a new run of the mill made in USA HSS bottoming tap. It was good for about 10 holes then began to get dull, and eventually chipped of a couple edges on the tap.tap.jpgbad tap.jpg
The machine shop told me that it was a very hardened piece when they added the holes for grease zerks
I will run the good tap into all the holes after to give them a final shape.

Gring the end flat and you've got another bottoming tap. ;)

Most taps lately seem to be made out of cheese. These things last forever.

All I work with is stainless, but I see McMaster also has this style for hardened steel too.

Thanks, unfortuantly there is no McMaster close by and shipping sucks.
Wish there was one as almost everything i do could be made easier with a McMaster near by

You got Fastenal's up your way? They can be handy. They're everywhere down here.

They shut down 90% of the stores in my areas. They closed the doors on their most profitable store in northern Virginia, now all it does is feed product directly to the Amazon warehouse down the street. Guy told me they do over $1m/month just dealing with amazon.

Fastenal around here are absolutely worthless. They don’t open until 9 and close at 3.

Fastenal was good 20 years ago. I forget they've changed. The closest one here no longer stocks much of anything. They want to to stop in and order them, come back and pick up. May as well order online from McMaster-Carr.

I believe they changed corporate leadership or at least the “corporate vision” like 10-15 years ago. Opened a shit ton of new stores and then figured out that was a bad idea, then COVID hit and they left it up to the individual store managers whether they wanted to remain open to the public or not.

My local quit accepting walk-ins. You could call in an order, but had to pay over the phone or have account. They would set your order outside the front door. They didn’t make 8 months like that before they shut down completely.

The store 40 miles away never had any sort of restrictions. They’re the only store left it northern Virginia, as far as I know.

I have the holes all taped
Double checked all the bolts, sleeves and washers to make sure none moved on to the dark recesses of the shop.
Ordered long bolts which had longer shoulders for more bearing surface, then had them shortened. Sleeves are made from hardened metel. There were a few old ones in it that were made from old water line. You could see the weld on the inside.
They did not fit well and got egged out
I am hoping that most of the slop around the bolts will be gone with the new sleeves.
Grade 8 Cat bolts, hope they are as good as they used to be.buncher bolts.jpgbuncher hardware.jpg
